Understanding weight management, loose skin and the role of surgical body contouring.

Weight loss is not simply about seeing a lower number on the weighing scale. For many patients, it is a process of improving metabolic health, reducing excess body fat and building sustainable habits.

But what happens when significant weight loss leaves you with loose skin, stubborn fat or changes in body contour that exercise alone cannot address?

That is where body contouring comes in.

What happens to the body after significant weight loss?

When the body loses a substantial amount of weight, the skin may not completely retract to fit the body’s new shape.

Patients may be left with:

These changes are not a sign that someone has “failed” at weight loss. They are simply part of how individual skin and tissues respond to changes in body volume.

Where does GLP-1 medication fit in?

Medications such as GLP-1 receptor agonists and related metabolic medications have become an important part of medically supervised weight management for appropriate patients.

However, medication is only one component of a comprehensive approach.

At Magnum Opus, weight management may involve assessment of:

Where indicated, I work alongside a multidisciplinary team of doctors to help patients approach weight management safely and systematically.

What is body contouring?

Body contouring includes surgical procedures designed to reshape areas of the body after weight loss, pregnancy or other major changes in body volume.

Depending on your anatomy and goals, this may include:

Liposuction

Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat that may persist despite weight loss and lifestyle changes.

It is primarily a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss treatment.

Tummy tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess abdominal skin and can address abdominal wall changes such as rectus muscle separation, when appropriate.

Arm lift

An arm lift can remove excess skin and reshape the upper arm following significant weight loss.

Thigh and other body-contouring procedures

Depending on the distribution of excess skin, other procedures may be considered to address the thighs, flanks, back or other areas.

When should you consider body contouring?

Ideally, body-contouring surgery is considered when your weight has become relatively stable and you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The timing is individual and depends on factors including:

A consultation helps determine whether you need fat removal, skin removal, muscle repair, or a combination of approaches.

Weight loss and body contouring are different things

This distinction is important.

Weight loss changes your body size. Body contouring changes your body’s shape.

Liposuction, for example, isn’t intended to treat obesity. Similarly, removing excess skin isn’t a substitute for weight management.

The two can, however, form different stages of the same transformation journey.

What I want patients to understand

There is no single “ideal” body after weight loss.

Some people may be completely happy with their new shape. Others may have areas of excess skin or stubborn fat that affect their comfort, clothing choices or confidence.

Both are valid.

Body contouring isn’t about creating a perfect body. It is about helping the right patient achieve a contour that feels appropriate for them.

The Magnum Opus approach

My approach to weight loss and body contouring is not simply “Lose weight → have surgery.”

It is about understanding the whole patient.

We first address health, nutrition, metabolism and sustainable weight management. Once weight is stable, we can assess what remains and determine whether surgical body contouring could be beneficial.

Lose the weight. Build the health. Then shape what remains.
